Falls In The Elderly
Trips and falls in the elderly are one of their most leading causes of injury. Most people are afraid of talking to their GP about it due to having initial thoughts that their concerns will not be urgent enough. However, all healthcare professionals take falls in the older generation very seriously due to the further impacts it can have on future health.
Safety Precautions Outside:
No matter where you go, there are always going to be some hazards that could cause a trip or fall. Make sure that they know their whereabouts, ensuring the pathways they take are flat and smooth – if you know it isn’t then it’s great to have someone there supporting them so you can help them with walking and supporting them with tougher surroundings.
Take into consideration:
- Choosing the correct footwear for the weather and terrain is important. Make sure they are solid and waterproof with a good grip, to help with stability to avoid any future trips and falls.
- Keeping organised. Avoid them taking any bags or carrying anything in their hands, so they have access to hold onto handrails, and supports – perhaps consider a mobility aid if they need extra care.
- Walk where it is well lit. If walking at night, make sure they walk by lampposts to keep them aware of their surroundings. Darkness can affect their balance, so if going out in the evening is necessary, then make sure their path is well lit.
- Monitor their eyesight. Having good vision is important to anyone of any age, especially within the older generation who are more vulnerable to trips and falls. If you spot that their eyesight isn’t as clear as it used to be, offer to make an appointment with them at the opticians.
Safety Precautions Inside:
Precautions within their home are as important as outside, perhaps even more so since they are spending all their time in one place. There are slight changes that you and they can make to ensure that they are always keeping safe inside and avoiding anything that could make them take any trips and falls.
- Have good lighting throughout their home, especially between their bedroom and the bathroom.
- Keep all walkways clear
- Do not allow socks on their own, or loose slippers
- If there are any carpets with rips, then make sure they get repaired quickly
- Use non-slip mats
- Install handrails and bars
How They Can Improve Their Balance:
Doing regular balance exercises can reduce the number of times that the average older adult trips and falls. Whether they prefer, walking, dancing, or even yoga, each activity can stimulate their mind and body, keeping them fitter and less likely to lose balance.
Many communities offer classes to enhance your movements. Bringing you and perhaps make it a weekly, fun activity that you do together.
